I wrote a blogpost earlier today and though this might be a building that is interesting to this sub. Here is an excerpt from the post about the history about why it was burned.
This church was the location of the start of the Lisbon Massacre (1506). Hundreds of people accused of being Jews (at this time Jews were forced to convert to Catholicism) were tortured, killed, and burnt at the stake. Though many responsible were arrested and hanged and the monks who had incited the massacre were burnt at the stake, the regret stuck with them. Lisbon was hit by 2 massive earthquakes and both hit this church particularly hard. Later it was the site of a massive fire. The Catholics in Lisbon believed that the church was being destroyed and burned as the result of retribution from God.
