Whenever I see a Youtube video on a new building or project I see the same kinds of comments complaining about how the new stuff sucks and older was better. When there comes sth new, here’s always something to complain about. For example, crying “deforestation” in Biophilic Architecture in Amsterdam and “fire hazard” in Wood City in Finland. And of course all the others about “ugly” glass and concrete structures. I usually ignore these but I have the feeling that many people(arch-normies) share these same ideas all over the world.
bad?
Sometimes I think people who say building and architecture were better “before” also think they’d love to live in “the good old days”, by that they think they’d be living in mansions and castles with servants and whatnot. But in reality, they’d be living in straw mud huts with their 20 siblings shitting in buckets and waiting for their death at 24 in the bubonic plague. I saw this Surviving a Day in Victorian Era doc, which was really satisfying and hilarious to watch, but also shows what many don’t realise about the past. Also maybe it’s just survivor bias?
also bad?
It just bugs me when people complain about modern or contemporary architecture as if architects just decide to bring a “glass concrete box” out of their asses and put it there and decide it’s cute just for the fun of it. I guess the same people would looove to live in an oversized, shitty Mc Mansion because the arches and orders are just so classy. Or maybe I just misunderstood the idea or something. (pls ignore my lacking English n grammar) Care to share your thoughts?
oh no, the trees!
