Hamptons-style homes are one of the most popular home designs in Australia. The idea of being close to a beach, bringing the outdoors in, and enjoying the natural sun or moonlight make this home style and design the best match for the lifestyle of an average Australian. It is common to see whitewashed homes in neutral tones or classic colours and highlighted with accessories and furniture that elicit the right coastal vibe. However, it can be very challenging to select the furniture that perfectly fits into the Hamptons style interior in some cases.
Robert Ellis and his wife Elaine are the owners of Perth-based Australian furniture studio, popularly referred to as Henry & Oliver Co. This company specializes in producing top-quality Hamptons style furniture. This makes the couple the perfect persons to give us tips on choosing the right furniture for Hamptons-style homes.
How would you define Hamptons style?
“Every Hamptons style home that I’ve come across is sophisticated and relaxed, and it gives a cool and inviting ambiance,” stated Elaine. “Hamptons style designs incorporate lots of
character and charm. The interior spaces should be airy, bright, and well-lit, giving you a tranquil feeling and a sense of relaxation. A home styled after the Hamptons style will incorporate a neutral colour palette, with the entire detail taking centre stage, like the real wood floorings, cabinetry, and wood mouldings.

What type of furniture fits a Hamptons-style home?
“All Hamptons-style furniture is designed to be beachy and relaxed,” said Elaine. “Imagine having plush couches clothed in soft natural fabrics, like linens, or softly-skirted sofas nicely blended with some large chairs in beiges and soft blues. You can also add natural wood elements such as a coffee table, link all the pieces together with a luxuriously textured rug.”
What is your advice for spotting furniture that suits a Hamptons-style home?
“You can easily spot the Hamptons style furniture,” said Elaine. “Try not to go for the ‘on trend’ items, and you should rather go for understated and classic pieces like the roll-armed sofa – something that will remain timeless.”
“Select neutral tone colours that will go well with the other furniture you already have or are willing to get,” stated Elaine. “To get the perfect sofa style, purchase complementary chairs like an ottoman or an oversized wing chair. You can make braver fabric choices when choosing your complementary chairs. However, try to avoid overly bold or bright colours. Going for the Hamptons style means that you are going for understated elegance.”
“Investment furniture like the pedestal leg dining table will never go out of class or date. The style has stood tall in all ages, and it is still standing the test of time. Collect natural timbers and do away with veneers or highly published timbers.
