Our colorful and modern laundry room makeover is done and we are in love! Check out how we transformed this space easily and affordably.
Hello!!!! If you follow me on Instagram you know that for the past couple of weeks we have been working on our modern laundry room makeover in our current house. Fun fact, my first ever blog post was about the laundry room makeover in our last house, lol! Do you remember our first laundry room makeover for only $71 in our old house? And then we gave it a better makeover about 7 years later (right before we sold it last year). So in case it isn’t obvious, I love a good laundry room makeover. I believe we should love EVERY room in our homes, even laundry rooms, pantries, etc.
But this is by far my favorite laundry room makeover we’ve done. It’s colorful, it’s modern and it was EASY and AFFORDABLE!
It’s a large room (12 feet x 7 feet), but the storage situation was a mess. The only storage is the cabinet below the sink (and we all know how frustratingly cramped those are) and the cabinets above the washer and dryer. Here’s the thing… I’m 5’9″ which is pretty tall for a woman and it’s HARD for me to reach anything above the lower shelves in those cabinets. Not only are they high (these are 10-foot ceilings for reference), but because the washer and dryer stick out so far it makes you have to reach EVEN farther. Long story short… the upper cabinets are nearly useless for us.

Let’s take a look at how it looks now…
Functional Changes
We removed Riggins’ crate and added an entire wall of functional storage using the IKEA Boaxel system (the new version of the Algot system that we used so much in our old house–you can read about that HERE). The ceilings are 10 feet tall, so it is A TON OF STORAGE (see the rendering below the photo). And all of the storage and drying rack that we’ve hidden behind those floor-to-ceiling curtains only cost $340! At some point I’ll share a post about the “hidden closet” and exactly how we use it, so stay tuned. If you can’t wait, you can see some peeks at it in my Instagram stories highlight reel.
We also removed the upper cabinets and replaced them with lower (and therefore usable) open shelving. They are not only more functional, but pretty! We found gorgeous walnut for the shelves at a local business (GPS Hardwoods in Kernersville, NC). We used these simple brackets to hold them in place. Now our laundry detergent, Oxiclean, dryer balls, etc. are so easy to reach. And of course I added some fun art and plants 🙂
Aesthetic Changes
This space looks TOTALLY different. We updated the light fixture. We added this removable wallpaper to bring in color and a fun pattern.
And can we talk about the awesome vinyl tile stickers from Mirth Studio?! They allowed us to totally update our outdated tile floors without any short of demo or hard work. And they were far more affordable than entirely new flooring! You can watch my 2-minute video about just how easy this process is below.
If you read the post about our design plans for the laundry room, you may remember that I had chosen these Pink velvet curtains to hide the closet system. Well, they didn’t come in the 120″ length that we needed and I didn’t feel like sewing, so we wound up going with these simple creamy white curtains.
I also painted the sink cabinet AND the countertops (we followed the exact same process that we used to paint our kitchen countertops to look like marble–you can see that tutorial post here). And we swapped out the hardware and faucet. This area looks DRASTICALLY different as a result of these super affordable fixes.
