Summer is hands-down my favorite season of the year – I love the sunshine, the warmth, and being able to be outside all day!
As fun as summer is, it can still pose some issues when you’re out getting bitten up by bugs, or getting sunburned when you forget to put sunscreen on. The following 6 recipes are some of my absolute favorites to have on hand in the summer. Give them a try, I’m sure they’ll become a must-have for you and your family too!
Flea and Tick Spray for your Furry Friends
8 ounces Apple Cider Vinegar
4 ounces warm distilled water
1/2 teaspoon salt (table or sea is fine)
1/2 teaspoon baking soda
Directions:
- Warm 4 ounces of distilled water in a glass measuring cup or bowl.
- Add salt and baking soda, stir until completely dissolved.
- Add in apple cider vinegar and mix thoroughly to combine.
- Pour mixture into a spray bottle and spray pet liberally before going outside.
Too Many Sweet Treats Digestive Oil
1-ounce sweet almond oil
6 drops Peppermint essential oil
12 drops Basil essential oil
Directions:
- Add all ingredients to a clean, empty glass bottle.
- Cap bottle and shake lightly to combine ingredients.
- Apply 7 drops to the stomach, chest, and neck area after indulging in too many sweet, summery treats.
Cooling Bug Bite Soother
1 ounce beeswax
3 ounces liquid coconut oil
20 drops Peppermint Essential Oil
10 drops Lavender Essential Oil
12 drops Geranium Essential Oil
12 drops Tea Tree Essential Oil
14 drops Eucalyptus globulus essential oil
Directions:
- Over medium-low heat, add beeswax to a double boiler and allow to simmer until fully melted.
- Add coconut oil and allow to fully melt.
- Remove mixture from heat and allow to cool for 1 minute.
- Add essential oils to beeswax and coconut oil and stir well with a wood, metal, or glass stir stick – wood craft sticks work great for this!
- Pour mixture into a jar and cap tightly, allow to cool.
- Use over bug bites or itchy skin for soothing, cooling relief.
After Sun Balm
2 ounces Calendula Oil
2 ounces Jojoba Oil
1 teaspoon Vitamin E Oil
1/4 cup shea butter
1 teaspoon beeswax
20 drops Carrot Seed Oil
10 drops Lavender Essential Oil
10 drops Peppermint Essential Oil
Directions:
- Over medium-low heat add beeswax to a double boiler and allow to simmer until fully melted.
- Add Calendula infused jojoba oil and vitamin e oil, stir gently.
- Add in shea butter, allow to fully melt.
- Remove mixture from stove top as soon as shea butter is fully melted.
- Allow mixture to cool for 1 minute.
- Add carrot seed, lavender, and peppermint oils and stir well.
- Pour mixture into a clean, empty glass jar and cap tightly.
- Allow to cool fully before using.
- Apply to areas of sunburn for instant cooling relief – this salve works just as well for kitchen related burns!
DIY Healing Salve
1/4 cup coconut oil (solid)
1/4 cup jojoba oil
1 tablespoon beeswax
20 drops Lavender Essential Oil
12 drops Frankincense carterii Essential Oil
18 drops Tea Tree Essential Oil
Directions:
- Over medium-low heat, add beeswax to a double boiler and allow to simmer until fully melted.
- Add coconut oil and allow to fully melt.
- Add olive oil and stir well.
- Remove mixture from heat and allow to cool for 1 minute.
- Add essential oils to the mixture and stir well with a wood, metal, or glass stir stick – wood craft sticks work great for this!
- Pour mixture into a jar and cap tightly, allow to cool.
- Use for irritated skin, including scrapes and abrasions, to minimize discomfort and promote healing.
Muscle Magic Sore Muscle Rub
1 ounce Arnica Oil
6 drops Peppermint Essential Oil
7 drops Rosemary Essential Oil
5 drops Eucalyptus globulus Essential Oil
- Add essential oils to Arnica oil and shake gently to mix well.
- Massage over sore joints and muscles to provide comforting relief.
