Airbnb and Made By Us are helping culture lovers plan their next trips with a wishlist of new Airbnb Experiences created by museums, theatres, archives, and more across the U.S.
The curated list of experiences has been designed to encourage visitors back to museums and theaters as the holiday season approaches, making up for valuable lost time as many cultural sites were shut for months on end. In an April 2021 survey conducted by the American Alliance of Museums, 15 percent of museums indicated that they are at risk of permanent closure.
According to Airbnb, many customers are choosing longer Airbnb stays as they plan their fall trips, with 60 percent of long-term nights booked in urban areas. Longer trips are the perfect opportunity to seek out the culture of the area and discover every landmark and hidden gem that makes a city hum. What better way to do this than with a visit to a museum or trip to the theater?
“Historic sites and museums are the heartbeat of our cities, and as the keepers of our stories, they contain critical tools and information that we need to shape our future,” said Caroline Klibanoff, Managing Director of Made By Us, in a press release announcing the collaboration. “By partnering with Airbnb, these Experiences offer entertainment, learning, and deeper context for how we live today, igniting curiosity for guests and sustaining our institutions.”
Brand new Airbnb Experiences will invite guests to travel back in time, go behind the scenes of history, or enjoy local fare amidst a stunning backdrop. Each participating organization will keep 100 percent of the proceeds from their Experience, aiding venues as they begin to recover from the impacts of the COVID-19 pandemic.
Participating organizations will include the National Archives Foundation, Betsy Ross House, Atlanta History Center, HistoryMiami Museum, Virginia Museum of History and Culture, Ford’s Theatre, and Genesee Country Village & Museum.
“The Airbnb Host community has long supported cultural sites in their cities, by sharing them with their guests,” said Catherine Powell, Global Head of Hosting at Airbnb. “This new series of Experiences with Made by Us will build on that legacy by offering new ways for the Airbnb community to play a valuable role in the future of US history institutions and preserving cultural cornerstones nationwide.”
