What Can I Use for the Rings?
When you are making this tree, the main part of the tree is made from rings. You can use any type of ring that you have on hand or can find. This is something fun to make with inexpensive or upcycled items, so get creative. Below are a few ideas that work great.
- Shower curtain rings
- Wooden rings
- Plastic binder rings
- Styrofoam rings
Wooden rings or shower curtain rings are the easiest to find or use. They are easiest to glue together and hold the paint the best.
If you do not have any of these small rings, you can also use cardboard rings. You can use a cup to trace the circle of the rings and then use another smaller cup to make the center. It is easiest to cut the rings out with an Exacto knife rather than scissors. However, know that if using cardboard, you’ll want to choose a much thicker type and be careful about the weight of your ornaments as the rings are the main support for this project.
What Paint Should I Use?
There are many types of paints that you can use, but I find that spray paint is the easiest. Using spray paint allows for easier coverage and makes it simpler to achieve. You can also use acrylic paint to cover the rings. If you are using liquid paint, you can dip the rings into the paint and hang them to dry if you want it to coat evenly, but know that this method may waste more paint and be a bit more costly.
Do I Have to Paint the Rings?
No! If you use shower curtain rings, you may be able to find them in different colors. for wooden rings, they can look great just with the natural look or even a bit of stain. I also love the idea of using something like colorful washi tape to wrap the rings instead of painting them.
Can I Add Lights to This Holiday Tree?
There are a lot of small strings of lights that you can easily add to this holiday tree. These strings of light can come in battery-operated strands or ones that plugin. Either of these will work with this Christmas decoration. You can wrap the lights around the rings or weave them through the tree as a whole. You can use white lights, colored lights, or a set of solid-colored lights.
How Can I Customize My Miniature Christmas Tree?
Whenever I am making a craft, I like to make sure there that there are simple ways to customize it. This is especially true if I will be sharing it here with you all. I know that since not everyone has the same supplies available or on hand, options are a must. Below are some ideas that I think would look great on this project.
- One of the simplest ways to make this miniature Christmas tree your own is to change the color. Options for this include painting each ring a different color to create a rainbow tree, or painting them all a solid color, or even just adding glitter. You could also just use different colors of ornaments inside the solid-colored rings.
- Add a string of Christmas lights to the tree.
- Glue on more miniature ornaments or small embellishments like the little snowflakes we added.
- Spray the tree with fake snow for a winter look.
- Glue or spray glitter at random spots for added sparkle.
The best part about this craft is that it’s so simple to make! All you need are some supplies from the dollar store (or even just around your house) and an hour of time. Follow our easy step-by-step instructions below for making one yourself!

How to Make Gold Miniature Christmas Tree
To create the base of your tree, glue 6 to 7 rings together on their sides.
Repeat this decreasing the number of rings by 1 until you have at least 4 to 5 “circles” of rings.
Now, stack them from largest to smallest and attach them with glue.
Spray paint the entire tree gold and set it aside to dry.
Remove the hanger from ornament balls and glue them in place between each ring. I used a variety of gold in different styles.
Attach a snowflake, star, or angel on top of the tree.
Finally, glue on a few miniature snowflakes or ornaments at random points between the gold balls.
