Vast, floor-to-ceiling windows and Escea’s timeless DF Series gas fireplace are the heroes in this contemporary villa extension. Harnessing natural light and creating a visual connection to the outdoors, the sleek lines and timeless design of the Escea fireplace grounds the living space, providing comfort, warmth and solace from the elements outside.
Kellie French of architecture and interiors studio Atelier Bond—who also happens to be the homeowner, says she always wanted to find a character home—retaining the frontage and restoring its original features.
“We love the details that character homes have to offer in their long hallways, archways, cornice work, and ceiling roses. There’s something romantic about keeping these elements and giving them a refresh.”
The contemporary extension celebrates the original home’s heritage elements and is highlighted by the strong juxtaposition of old and new – the rear addition featuring expansive glass, open plan living, and robust concrete flooring catering to the needs of a growing family.
To anchor the living space and provide year-round warmth and ambience, the pared-back aesthetic of the Escea DF960 gas fireplace was the perfect fit. With a large viewing glass that optimises the dramatic impact of flames, the classic shape is reminiscent of a traditional wood-burning fire. The fireplace integrates seamlessly into the contemporary extension while paying homage to the building’s heritage.
“We wanted a high-quality fireplace that had an aesthetic value to it. Having a fireplace is just one of those things that make a space feel cosy in the winter. Knowing how expansive this space was going to be, having a fireplace just anchors the lounge area that little bit more,”
-Kellie French, homeowner.
Minimalist in design, the fireplace surround sits on an Aquila marble bench flanked by sleek black joinery.
With Escea’s Zero Clearance rating, it’s possible to install the fireplace directly into non-combustible materials such as timber, plasterboard and bespoke joinery. Powered Direct Vent and flexible flue technology also gives designers complete design freedom when it comes to integrating Escea fireplaces into both new builds and renovations – their innovative design, both in form and function, enables them to fit seamlessly into any interior.
