Upcycled Shampoo Bottle Cellphone Charger Holder

This DIY project is perfect for you if you are one of those people who is always knocking your cell phone off the table. With a little bit of creativity and some recycled materials, you can make this stylish and functional cellphone holder.  It’s great for keeping your phone in place while it charges, but can also be a simple way to hang your phone near your desk or by your bedside table. 

Not only will this keep your phone safe, but it also adds tons of personality to any room.  It’s a great way to show off your creative side and reused materials that would have otherwise gone to waste.  If you like recycling and creating something from nothing, then you are going to also appreciate this list of projects to turn household items into something fresh and new.

What Should I Cover The Outside of My Holder With? 

You can get as creative as you want when it comes to covering the outside of the shampoo bottle cellphone holder. You can cover the whole thing with fabric, paper, or decorative washi tape.

Another way to make it unique is to also start just by painting the holder or even just using some paint pens or markers to create a custom look.  I love the idea of using a marker to create a pattern of lines or swirls.  Something super unique without having to find more craft supplies. If kids are making this, you can even let them add stickers to the holder.

Of course, I chose to use some scrap fabric I had on hand to just cover the base of my cellphone holder.  It’s a great choice since I had it on hand, and since fabric comes in every pattern imaginable, you can make them suit every person in your home!  

How Do I Get The Cover to Stick? 

Sometimes it is hard to get things to stick to plastic bottles because the plastic is too smooth. If you find that you are having issues getting things to stick to the plastic, whether it is tape, fabric, glue, or paint, use sandpaper to rough up the plastic. You do not need to do much, it is just to give what you are using a texture to stick to.

I found that hot glue worked fine to secure the fabric, but if you are making with kids and want to use lighter craft glue, then you may need to give the holder some texture to make it stick more strongly. 

Isn’t This a Fire Hazard?

Whenever you have anything near an electrical outlet of any kind, you can run the risk of a fire hazard. Things heat up or cause a random spark and you could have an issue. While that is very unlikely, you do not want to leave this unattended. When using this, make sure you are awake and present so that you know if there is an emergency of any kind.

Of course, I can also recommend using a command hook of some kind to hang this on the wall next to an outlet, instead of right against it.  That can make it much safer, but still something you’ll want to keep track of and not leave alone where it could get too hot. 

Supplies Needed

How to Make a Cellphone Holder

Remove any labels, paint, or printing on the empty bottles.  If they are printed on, you can use nail polish remover to easily get the paint or log off of the bottle.  Once clean, let it air dry before cutting a slice into the front of the bottle, about halfway down the length of the bottle. 

Now, cut up the sides of the bottle, but leave the back of the bottle in place.  Cut off the lid of the bottle, then trim around the edges to round them and make them smoother.  You’ll have a half-bottle front with a solid back. 

Now, use something to measure a hole for the back to slide over a charger plug or hook.  Cut out this space and remove it, leaving at least 1/4″ above the top of the cut and below the top of the bottle. 

Now, it’s time to cover or decorate your phone holder.  If using pens or markers, doodle, and cover with whatever design you like.  For those covered with paper or fabric, you will measure the size of the bottom half of the bottle and then cut the fabric to fit. 

Glue the fabric onto the bottle front first, smoothing down over the front and then around the edges. 

Tuck and fold the fabric to cover the backside, and then over the base of the bottle.  I like to use the folding method you would with wrapping a present to make a neat base. 

Once the glue dries, you can hang this over the charger on the outlet, or use a hook to hang it on a table, shelf, wall, or desk to hold your phone nearby.
