What Should I Use for My Wreath Form?
I like to use a styrofoam wreath form because they are the cheapest and easy to work with. Plus, I can often find these at my local dollar store for just a few dollars.
You can also use a plastic or grapevine wreath form if you prefer. I like the foam ones because it is so easy to push the pieces of denim down into the wreath. Of course, you can always go with making your own wreath form by cutting out a circle of cardboard or plastic. Take a piece of strong cardboard, or place multiple layers glued together, and cut it into a circle. Then cut out the inside circle. This creates a wreath form that you can use for nothing.
What Is The Best Way to Cut Pieces of Denim Into Exact Sizes?
The best way to cut pieces of denim into exact sizes is to use a rotary cutter. If you don’t have a rotary cutter, you can use a sharp pair of fabric scissors.

Lay the denim flat on a cutting surface, and then cut strips that are 1” wide and around 6″ long. You can make your strips shorter or longer, depending on the size of your wreath form and if you are going to use my method or will wrap and tie the pieces.
Another way to get the strips the same size, easily, is to take a piece of cardboard and wrap the denim strips around it. Then you cut down one side and then down the other side and that creates the strips all the same size.
Can I Use Other Things to Decorate The Front of This Wreath?
Yes! You can use anything you like to decorate the front of this wreath. Buttons, scraps of fabric, ribbon, or even a fun brooch would look great. I love the idea of using ribbon and lace to make little bows, but you can do anything you want.
Another idea to decorate the rag wreath is to use additional strips of denim to create a bow. Or you could use any ribbon with a wire edge to create a bow.
I love denim and lace together, so I often use both to decorate my wreaths. A simple way to add lace to the rag wreath is to create strips of the lace and add them around the wreath in different places. Another idea is to create rosettes or other designs with flowers. Glue or tie strips of lace around the wreath.
Is This Safe to Hang on the Front Door?
Yes, this wreath is safe to hang on the front door. Denim is a natural fabric, and it won’t hold moisture as other materials can. This means that it won’t easily get mildewy or moldy as other materials can.

I would still recommend that you take it down if there is a severe storm or if you know it will be exposed to a lot of moisture. But otherwise, it’s perfectly safe to hang on the front door.
Supplies Needed
How to Make a Denim Rag Wreath
Begin by cutting the hem off the leg of a pair of old blue jeans. Set this aside.
Then, cut the strips of denim out. You will need enough to cover the front of the wreath form and around the edges. This would be anywhere from 50 to 100 strips, depending upon the size you choose to make. Start with 50 and make more if needed.
Cut the strips 1″ wide by 6″ long. This is made easier when you use a cutting mat and rotary blade but can be done with scissors.
Now, begin covering the wreath form with the denim pieces you cut. First, fold them in half and add a dab of glue to the outside fold.
Then, use the dowel rod, or something similar, to push the denim into the wreath form.
Repeat this process, continuing to push the denim pieces into the form until the front and bottom/top edges are covered. You don’t have to cover the back side if you are hanging against a wall or door.
Once the wreath is completely covered, make the bows go on the side of the wreath. I started by sewing lace ribbon into a circle with a needle and thread. Sew it securely in the center to hold it into shape.
Repeat this process with the burlap ribbon until you have 2 to 3 bows in various sizes.
To the middle of each bow add a few of the mini fabric roses.
Now, glue those bows to the side of the wreath or as desired.
Add a bit of ribbon on the top to hang or hook over a traditional metal door hanger if you have one in place.
