What Should I Use as the Base for A Cupcake Diaper Cake?
If you want your cupcake to be easy to carry and move, you’ll want to put it on something solid. I start by forming the cupcake inside a pan to keep them together and easy to form. Then, you can transfer it to a piece of cardboard or similar item to keep it sturdy.
Other options include platters, an actual box of diapers that have been wrapped or even sitting it on top of a baby book or kids’ books you are also gifting.
How Do You Wrap a Diaper Cake for Gifting?
This diaper cake cupcake can be wrapped in a few ways. Some of my favorite ways are to use a large gift bag or box that can be unwrapped at the baby shower. But, a classic option is to wrap it in cellophane so it is obvious what the gift actually is.
Of course, it is also very common to just bring the diaper cake as is and put it out on the gift table or even to use as a decoration for the party. This is one of those gifts that you do not have to feel bad about not wrapping because it looks so stinking cute that everyone will love seeing it on the table!

Ways to Customize a Diaper Cake Cupcake
There are tons of ways to make this diaper cake cupcake truly unique. You can start with things like using different-sized diapers, but you can do so much more!
- Divide the diapers and make a few smaller cupcakes instead of one larger cupcake.
- Use different colored paper, pom poms, and decorations.
- Make with cloth diapers, bibs, onesies, or receiving blankets instead of regular diapers for a fun addition.
- Add toys or gifts to the cupcake.
What Toys Can I Add to a Diaper Cake?
Part of decorating the diaper cake can easily include adding a few toys or additional gifts. This one is simply decorated, but you can easily replace those pom poms or add to them with small items perfect for a baby. Below are a few ideas that I think will be perfect additions.
- Baby rattles or teethers.
- Stuffed animals or stuffed toys.
- Pacifiers, nail clippers, baby combs, baby brushes, nose syringes, or similar items.
- Small bottles of infant medications like pain relief drops, gas drops, or even saline nasal sprays.
- Onesies or clothing.
- Receiving blankets, crib sheets, or bedding.
- Swaddlers, wraps, or baby carriers.
- Baby booties, socks, or hats.

How to Make a Cupcake Diaper Cake
On a piece of cardboard cut into a circle or inside a pan that is large and round, begin rolling the diapers into a large cupcake shape.
Start with a single rolled diaper in the middle, then wrap additional diapers all around it to create the larger round roll.
Use a total of 8 to 10 diapers to create this large roll, then use a rubber band around the center to hold it in place.
Go around the sides of the roll and pull up on the diapers at random to fluff it out and make it a bit taller in the center with texture and different angles around the sides. The idea is to make it look like uneven frosting piped around the top of the cupcake.
Cut a piece of tissue paper long enough to wrap around the base of the cupcake diaper cake. Make it at least 6″ wide.
Fold the tissue paper in half.
Then, roll or fold it over itself until it’s about 3″ wide. Use scissors to cut along the top of this at a half-moon shape to create scallops.
You can then pinch the scallops together and glue them to create a slightly pleated look.
Unfold the tissue paper and wrap it around the base of the diapers to create a cupcake liner look.

Now, carefully pull apart the cotton balls so they create a length of cotton. Layout the double-sided tape and place the cotton balls onto the tape to secure creating 2 to 3 feet of the cotton ball “frosting”.
Lay this back and forth along the different folds of the diapers around the top of the cupcake.
Then, glue pink and purple pom-poms at random places along the cotton ball pieces to add “sprinkles”
