One of my favorite ways to make my hair look unique and yet still feminine is to use this half-up waterfall braid. This simple style is beautiful, easy for anyone to create, and wears great throughout the day.
Half Up Waterfall Braid
If you need something that is simple but also can look a bit upscale, a waterfall braid is a great choice. It easily goes from everyday wear to a party or event. This works well in straight hair, but wavy or slightly curled hair can also look beautiful using this method.
I love this simple half-up and half-down hairstyle. It’s one of those types that takes just a few minutes to put up and looks like a professional did it. If you like this and want more easy styles, we have a list of 5-minute hairstyles that is great. It’s ideal for giving you ideas for those busier days. And, if you have short hair, then you’ll love this huge list of ideas for short hair. Great styles for everyday wear.
What Do I Need to Create a Waterfall Braid?
The beauty of this particular hairstyle is that you really only need to use a brush or comb, hair ties, and a Topsy Tail or hair needle. I like using the smaller elastic hair bands for this because they aren’t bulky and create a super sleek look. Plus, they are cheap enough that you can just clip them out of your hair and throw them away and not worry about losing them.

Half Up Waterfall Braid Tutorial
This style is ideal for long hair when you want it out of your face but not pulled up completely. It is great for both thin hair and thick hair, and while you can do this with freshly washed hair, it’s also great for hair that is slightly dirty.
Before you begin, make sure to comb or brush through your hair to remove any tangles. Then, you can part your hair as you normally would. A side part or middle part can both work great for this hairstyle.
Step 1
Start by pulling a small section of hair out from the top and side of your head. Now, divide this into 2 equal sections and begin twisting.
Twist the two strands, then wrap one over the other, pulling it around to twist again and repeat the process until you have twisted the hair about halfway down, or at least long enough to pull back and tie in the center of the back of your head. Clip the end of the twist to hold it in place.
Step 2
Repeat this process on the opposite side of your head, pulling a small section out, then dividing and twisting it.
Once both sides are twisted, bring them behind your head and connect them with a hair tie in the center.
Step 3
Now, you will begin weaving the hair into this twist. Starting on one side, just above the twist, pull a small section of hair out, and over the twist.
Then, use a Topsy Tail, to carefully thread this hair through the twist, between the sections.
Continue this process, adding a new section of hair every 1″ or so until you have gone all the way around from one side to the other.

You can add ribbon or special pins to the twists if you want, or leave it simple like our model.
More Beautiful Hairstyles
Long hair can be tedious to care for, and you may be tired of the same old boring ponytail or bun. Adding something new to your routine is always fun, and while I love the idea above, this isn’t the only style to share. Below are more fun ways to style long or medium-length hair.
