I love this half up half down twisted braid hairstyle. It’s super easy to do, only takes minutes, and looks absolutely beautiful. Instead of a boring ponytail, you can add a little of something extra like these twists to give your hair a romantic look. This half up half down look is great for every day but nice enough to look professional at work or be updated for a night out!
Twisted Braid Hairstyle
The twisted braid hairstyle is one of my favorites because it is so easy to do. You don’t need any special skills. All you need to do is twist the hair back and around itself and secure it with a hair tie. It’s super versatile for different hair lengths and textures. I love that I can use this on my long hair but another person could use this look in a short or shoulder-length style.
If you like this braided look, then you need to check out our Bohemian-style fishtail ponytail. It’s another great way to take a boring look and really become a gorgeous style. I love how this is so easy to update and that both this twisted braid style and the fishtail mentioned are ideal for any event.
One of the best things about this look is that you don’t need anything but hair ties to make it work. So, it’s a great choice for pulling your hair up at the last minute or when you are out and about. Of course, a brush or comb is a benefit to detangle your hair, and I love the additional little clip at the end of the braid, but it isn’t necessary.

While this style doesn’t need much, some other hairstyles do. I love the tools and products below and can’t recommend them enough. Even if you don’t need them for this style, they are great to have on hand.
Other Items I Love:
Sometimes, having the right items on hand is what makes a new style easier to manage. I especially like having a good quality detangling brush and dry shampoo on hand for those days I don’t feel like washing my hair.
Half Up Twisted Braid Hairstyle Tutorial
One of the best things about this style is that it can easily work for any hair length or texture. Wavy and curly hair looks just as great with this as straight hair does! You can also use this style on both freshly washed hair as well as dirty hair. A perfect choice any day for any event or need.
Before you begin putting your hair up, take the time to comb through or remove any tangles so the sections won’t get knots as you twist and braid the hair.

Step 1
On the side of your part, separate a section of hair to begin twisting backward. Start at the hairline, and pull your hair away from your head to twist. You want it to be twisted tightly around the side to the crown of your head.
Clip this twist against the back of your head to keep it intact while you move on to repeat the process on the other side.
Clip the second side back with the first on the center of the crown of your head.
Step 2
Once both sides have been clipped in the back, you will bring the ends together. Criss-cross the ends, or loop them over each other, to then begin the twisted braid.
Step 3
Now, pull the two sections on the back apart and begin twisting them together. Twist the hair, then overlap and pull under, back to twist, and then repeat until you have braided the entire section of hair.
Step 4
Tie the end of the twisted braid with an elastic hairband. Then you can add a decorative pin or bow on the end of the braid if desired.
If not already done, you can also curl the hair around this braid to add more volume and a whimsical look to the half up hairstyle.
How Do I Get Twisted Braids to Stay Twisted?
One of the hardest things to do is keep your twisted braid actually twisted. The key to this is to make sure you are twisting both sides/sections at every turn. You will be wrapping them together, but in the process, you need to keep the hair twisted so it is tight.

Then, put a hair band at the end of your twisted braid and make sure it is pulled tight. A looser braid will fall out much easier. Another option is to use gel or mousse on the hair prior to twisting to help it hold together as you twist and tie it off.
