Postmedia sat down with global online marketplace Etsy.com trend expert Dayna Isom Johnson. Etsy is a popular hub for crafters and those who specialize in handmade and vintage items. Johnson, who was a judge on NBC show Making It hosted by Amy Poehler, is known for her finger-on-the-pulse predictions in fashion and home decor.
Celebrating the Amalfi Coast
For those who can’t make it to the Mediterranean Sea this summer, why not bring a bit of that style to your home? Amalficore — referencing the Amalfi Coast — is a fantastic summer trend for anyone who wants to add pops of Mediterranean-inspired fun to their living space. “For shoppers who are interested in the trend but are not ready to fully commit, I recommend starting with smaller accents – like citrus-inspired art, scalloped dishes, or sardine candles – and building from there,” Johnson says.

Show your coastal stripes
As temperatures rise, coastal stripes are making a strong comeback in home decor, says Johnson. We’re particularly seeing this trend in striped linen tablecloths, patio cushions, beach bags, bedding and even curtains. It’s the allure of the Hamptons’ lifestyle and timeless, nautical charm, says Johnson. “Stripes evoke a sense of seaside serenity, transforming any space into a coastal retreat whether you go with traditional blue and white or have fun with bolder colours,” she notes.

‘Freshness’ a major theme this summer
Last year, we saw very “lived-in” spaces, with plenty of plant motifs, soft tones and personal touches that brought a lot of warmth and personality to people’s homes, Johnson observes. This summer, things feel a lot fresher and more playful, with inspiration drawn from water, be it a beach house in the Hamptons or a coastal town in the Mediterranean, she says.
“I’m a sucker for anything citrus inspired, so I’m completely in love with the Amalficore trend,” the trend expert admits. “I also spent time there last summer and am bringing those pieces of inspiration into my entertainment this year.”

Embracing that ‘Amalficore’ vibe
More than anything else, Johnson says she loves hosting her family and friends, and summer entertaining is as good as it gets. This summer, she plans to incorporate some of these decor trends in her beach and park picnic parties.
“I’m also gearing up for summer travel to Cabo and looking forward to embracing the “Amalficore” trend in my outfits, with citrus prints paired with neutral, lightweight pieces like linen midi skirts and dresses,” Johnson says.

Romance is in the autumn air
Earlier this year, romantic-inspired home decor saw a resurgence as people sought to romanticize life’s everyday moments, says Johnson. She predicts we’ll continue to see interest in romantic-inspired home decor this fall, with soft textures and shapes, curved furniture and little luxuries like candle snuffers, cozy throw blankets, handcrafted vases and more, she says.
