It was delightful to see outer space as a rising trend for kids’ decor on the list—definitely wouldn’t have predicted it!
Looking ahead to next year, I’m especially excited about outer space–themed kids’ decor. While the trend might feel unexpected, kids went through a lot this past year, and space-themed accents are a really great way to give them a much-needed escape while opening up their imaginations.
What products would you recommend for those who are interested in embracing the friluftsliv trend throughout 2021?
Friluftsliv is all about embracing nature and making the most of the outdoors, whether it’s discovering a new hiking trail, brushing off a bicycle, or simply bringing indoor elements—like cozy blankets, serving trays, or accent furniture—outside to create cozy yards, patios, stoops, or balconies. Fire pits are also an ideal option for spending more time outdoors, as they provide extra warmth during the cooler months.
You mentioned the idea of shoppers putting their “money where their hearts are” in 2021. How do you see that manifesting in shopping habits going forward?
Shoppers are making increasingly more mindful and meaningful choices about what they buy. In 2021, people will be putting more thought than ever into not only how their items are made but also the impact of their purchases. And while it’s always important to shop from small businesses, it’s even more so during challenging times. Now more than ever, when you shop from a small business, you’re making a difference in someone’s life and livelihood.
Are there any other home and living trends that you predict or hope for in 2021 that didn’t make it into the blog post?
With such a tumultuous year behind us, I’m predicting that self-care routines will gain popularity again next year. Shoppers will look to restore tranquility and balance in their lives by investing in little luxuries, like spa-worthy candles, skincare, and robes, and turning towards items that promote mental health, like journals or meditation guides.
Were there any big moments for Etsy this year that you’d like to recap?
At Etsy, small businesses are at the heart of everything we do, and so much of our work this past year has been focused on supporting our sellers at a time when they needed it most. I’m particularly proud of our continued efforts to highlight Black-owned shops, spotlight our creative community of sellers in the second-annual Etsy Design Awards, and bring new shoppers to Etsy through our celebrity collection launches and new ad campaigns.
Some of the search upticks, like face masks and hand sanitizers, seem totally logical; did any of the 2020 trends surprise you?
I was pleasantly surprised to see how much crafting resonated with shoppers throughout 2020. While the DIY movement has always been close to my heart, I loved seeing even more people turning to creative projects, like tie-dyeing and embroidery, to express themselves and learn new skills.
