It’s quick and easy, and the result is absolutely stunning.  It’s also a great way to repurpose old fabric scraps into something beautiful and useful. You can make this as a gift, too!  What a fun upcycled idea for the holidays!

Fabric Flower Candle Holder

This flower candle holder is a great project for beginners. It’s easy and fun, and you can make it in just a few hours! You’ll need some fabric, scissors, and a LED candle. You are using a recycled base and scrap pieces of fabric so the cost of this project is minimal.

The perfect gift for your loved one, or just yourself! With this beautiful flower candle holder, you will be able to create a wonderful ambiance in any room. Display it on your mantle, on the coffee table, or use it as part of a centerpiece. It will even look wonderful on shelves or next to plants on a plant stand.  If you prefer something more natural, check out this rustic candle holder that is also a fun holiday decoration.  For something a little less holiday-themed, you might like this wine glass tealight candle lantern instead.

What Do I use for the Candle Holder in the Center?

You want to use something that is round and is a little deep like a jar. I used an empty container that was sturdy and was already gold-colored, but you can use just about anything you have on hand.  Below are a few other ideas that would work.

  • Jars from baby food or other small recycled food jars.
  • Mason jar lids or any small metal or plastic lid that is deep.
  • Yogurt cups or k-cups that are empty for smaller flower options.
  • Empty tuna or cat food cans that have been cleaned and labels removed.

Do I Have to Know How to Sew to Make This?

You are not doing a lot of sewing for this flower candle holder. You will be using a needle and thread but you don’t need true sewing skills. This is basic or beginner level hand sewing level.

Can I Glue the Fabric Instead of Sewing It?

If you do not have basic sewing skills or do not want to sew the fabric, you can use other things to hold the fabric together. You can use hot glue or fabric glue. There is also stitch witchery. These things will hold together but they will not last as long as they will when you sew it.

Can I Make With Felt Instead of Fabric?

The great thing about this craft is you can use whatever kind of fabric you like or have on hand. You can use anything from cotton to silk.  If you want something that requires less sewing or because you don’t have fabric on hand, you can use felt instead. You can use a wide range of fabric pieces to create this pretty flower candle holder.

What Other Ways Can I Decorate This?

There is no limit to the ways that you can decorate this candle holder. You can add glitter, which is always a favorite. Add pieces of colorful fabric or add lace or tulle to it. You can also add things like beads, sequins, and small little trinkets to the holder.

Another idea is to paint the actual holder. Whatever you are using as the base of the candle holder, you can paint the inside and parts of the outside that are showing.  I love having this turn out gold, but you can definitely paint it any color including green, red, blue, silver, or even purple if you wanted!  As with all of our craft ideas, this is just a basic idea of what to do, a guide for your own imagination to learn from.

How to Make a Fabric Flower Candle Holder

On the green fabric, measure a circle that is 3″- 4″ wide.

Cut out this circle and use it as a template to cut out a total of 10-12 circles then set them aside.

On the red fabric, measure a circle that is 7″-8″ wide.

Cut out this circle and use it as a template to cut out a total of 6-8 circles then set them aside.

Prepare the needle and thread for sewing with a long loop of thread.

Fold a red fabric circle in half, then in half again.  This creates a “triangle” shape with the open end the larger flat side.

hand folding red fabric

Thread the needle and thread through the open end, going back and forth along the bottom loosely.  Once you have sewn along the edge of the longer side of the triangle of fabric, pull it together to form a petal-like shape.  Then sew into that shape and tie off then knot the end.

Repeat this process of folding and sewing all of the red and green circles until you have multiple “petals’ in each color, with the green smaller than the red.

Now, using a new long length of thread on the needle, begin sewing the petals together.  Push the needle and thread through the bottom of each of the red petals, lining them up in a circle on the thread next to each other.

Once all of the red petals are threaded together, place the gold bowl in the middle so the petals surround it.  Spread out the petals to form the circle, then sew into this shape with the correct space in the middle to sit the bowl.

Repeat this process with the green petals.

Glue the gold bowl into the middle of the red petals.

Then put the green petals over the top and settle on top of the red.  Glue them to the bowl also.

Add a strip of lace around the edge of the bowl, folding and crimping as you add to create a ruffle look, on top of the green petals.
