Whimsical Floral Birdcage Candle Holder

This beautiful DIY floral birdcage candle holder is so easy to make but it looks like something you would find at a boutique store. It’s so unique and has both a rustic and classic look that fit almost any home decor.  This project uses scrap crafting supplies and a few jar lids and turns them into a gorgeous decoration. Add your own finishing touches to turn this into a spectacular addition to any room of your home.

Floral Birdcage Candle Holder

Recently, I have loved seeing how I can make my own little birdcage styled decor. There are tons of cute ways to use regular craft supplies and turn them into something beautiful. I love trying to make copycat items, and this one was inspired by some I have recently seen in stores. It’s a perfect choice for adding something pretty to a room or shelf.

You can easily customize your candle holder with different colors, vines, flowers, or styles. The basic process will be the same, and your masterpiece can be used as a decoration, centerpiece, or a functional candle holder. It’s even ideal to use as a little book end or a lovely decoration to hang from a windowsill.

What Size Candles Fit In This Holder?

When you are making this floral birdcage candle holder, the size candle that will fit depends on how wide and tall you make your holder. For the most part, the candle holder will fit a tea light or votive candle. Make sure there is a good distance from the top of the candle and the top of the birdcage. You can make this larger or even smaller if you prefer.

While you could potentially burn a real candle in this birdcage, I would recommend only doing so if you make a larger holder.  You would want a considerable amount of space between the candle and the sides and top of the cage. Otherwise, this would be a fire hazard.

My preferred way of burning candles is to actually use a flameless LED style candle. It looks and glows like a real candle but uses batteries. Since there is no fire involved, you don’t have to worry about the potential fire hazard.

Different Ways to Customize A Candle Holder

One of the best parts of homemade home decor is that you can customize them any way you like.  That includes little different embellishments, using the supplies you have on hand, or even how you plan to glue or secure the pieces together.  I love getting creative, but sometimes I know it’s hard to think of something different or unique.  Below are a few things that might help you make yours unique.

• Paint the bars on the cage different colors to match your decor theme.
• Use fabric instead of burlap for covering the lids.
• Paint the lids instead of covering them with fabric.
• Add miniature birds, butterflies, or dragonflies to the cage bars.
• Add a hook to the top to hang it from the ceiling instead of using twine.
• Wrap the bars with ribbon instead of the vines.

What Can I Use for the Cage Bars?

When you are making this birdcage candle holder you can use almost anything as the bars for the cage. You can use dowels, skewers or even sticks you find outside. You could even use pencils if that is all you have on hand. There is no reason to buy anything expensive to use for the bars.

Straws, twine, or ribbon could also be connected to the top and bottom of your cage to make it look like bars if you prefer. Get creative and use what you have on hand. Just be mindful that different items shouldn’t be used near a real flame. If you prefer to burn a candle with real flame, you’ll want to choose your materials wisely.

Supplies Needed

• Mason jar lids
• Dowels
• Fake vines
• Miniature artificial roses
• Burlap
• LED tealight candle
• Rope
• Scissors
• Wire or wood clippers
• Hot glue gun
• Hot glue sticks or hot glue rope

How to Make a Birdcage Candle Holder

Use the lid to trace two circles onto the burlap.

Cut out the circles and set them aside.

Use the lid as a guide to cut a larger square or circle out of the burlap.

Glue the circle of burlap onto the inside of the lid.

Cover the outside of the lid with the burlap and glue into place wrapping around the edge of the lid and trimming off any excess.

Measure the dowels to the height you want the birdcage, and cut off any extra with the wood or wire clippers.

Glue the dowels onto the bottom lid, then glue and attach the top lid to create the cage.

Starting around the bottom edge of the cage, wrap and glue the artificial vines around the shape of the lids, as well as around the dowels. 

Add the miniature flowers to the vines randomly until you are happy with the look.

Glue the rope to the top of the cage in a circle and add a few flowers around the edges.

Now you can hang your birdcage, set it on a counter, or add your favorite candle into the center for lighting a room.

Crafting Tip

I prefer using flameless votive candles for this project.  They are much safer, and it’s a lot easier to use them versus real candles on a project like this.  I pick them up in bulk on Etsy, but you can also find them at your local Dollar Tree, on Amazon, or even at Walmart.
