How Do I Curl the Plastic?

There are a few ways to curl the plastic. For this case, I went super easy and folded it down and into a small slit on the bottom side of the bottle.

If you want it to look a bit different, you can bend it around a dowel rod or stick and this will give it a small curl. If you want dramatic curls as I have you will want to heat the plastic slightly. You can use a candle but this takes a lot of attention to make sure you are not melting the plastic or burning yourself.

If you want a simpler way or a way that works well with children, you can use a crafting heat gun. These are small hot air blowers that are designed for projects like these. They are easier to use and safer, however, the candle or lighter is a much cheaper option.

What All Can I Use This For?

My favorite is to make these soda bottle flower pots and hang them outside. They can also be used inside the house. They would look beautiful as part of a centerpiece or just sitting on a side table in your living room. They are basic but can be updated and made to be a bit fancier if needed.

They make a great way to gift someone a plant! An inexpensive but customized planter is easy to make with this tutorial and friends and family will love them.

If you wanted to use them for something other than a flower pot, you could also use them as a pencil holder, paintbrush holder, or even to hold utensils in your kitchen. The options are really only limited by your imagination.

Do I Have to Hang This Outside?

No! It can sit on a table or even hang from an archway or ceiling inside your home. I love using this outside, but they are equally as nice inside your home as part of your home decor.

What Do I Use to Hang My Planter?

You want to use something that is strong enough to hold the bottle, but also the plant you add to the inside of it. Twine or rope is easy and a common choice, but I also love to use a strong heavy-duty fishing line because it is clear and can easily match anything inside your home. That helps it to not distract from the flower pot while being strong enough to hold it in place.

Another idea is to use colorful yarn. You can make it match the colors of the flower pot. If you are feeling very crafty, you can design in a macrame style. Or, just use a good sturdy string, rope, twine, or ribbon that can hold the weight of your flower pot.

Can I Add More Decorations to My Flower Pot?

You can also add some rocks or pebbles to the bottom of the soda bottle before adding the soil. This will help with drainage. Or, you can just decorate it using a hot glue gun to attach decorations like shells, buttons, or beads around the neck of the soda bottle. Just be careful not to get too close to the rim with the hot glue gun.

You can also decorate the outside of the soda bottle with stickers, washi tape, or paint. Get creative and have fun with it! Use craft paint to make flowers, polka dots, stripes, or even a few sayings on all sides of the bottle if you want to make it even more unique.

How to Make a Soda Bottle Flower Pot

Remove the label from the soft drink bottle, rinse it out, and let it dry. Then, once ready, use a marker to draw a circle around the base of where the bottle begins to flatten from the top of the bottle.

Repeat this on the bottom of the flat space, just before it curves downard.

Now, every 1/2″, connect these two lines with a line from top to bottom.

Once those are in place, use a craft knife to make a slit at the top edge of each of these lines, going downward. Leave the stripes intact all around at this point.

Now, cut all but two of the pieces off at the top Leave the two on the sides intact to hold the top and bottom together, leaving the others dangling down the sides.

Now, below the very bottom line of the bottle, add a few angled lines around the bottom, one for each of the dangling pieces above.

Cut through those slits, just to open them.

Now, bend down those dangling pieces, and push them through the slits, so they are angled over each other. Sort of in a spiral around the bottle.

Use the soldering iron to make a hole through the center of the lid.

Once all are in place, and the lid is screwed back on, spray paint the bottle green and set it aside to dry completely.

After it is dry, string twine through the hole in the lid and tie or glue into place for hanging.

Then add a flower in the center.
